'Rare' diseases impact the lives of a billion people. “By fixing rare diseases in the health system, you actually fix the health system itself,” explains Alexandra Heumber, CEO, Rare Diseases International. "People with rare diseases are often “invisible” to their own healthcare system", says Soraya Bekkali of Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease. She tells the World Economic Forum’s #RadioDavos podcast how we can change that. “It's something that can impact any family at any time,” shares Will Greene of the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research of his own life-changing experience of rare disease. Over 300 corporate leaders gathered in Munich this week and agreed on one thing: the rules of corporate planning have changed. At our Industry Strategy Meeting 2026, hosted first at Siemens headquarters and then at SAP's Innovation Lab, conversations moved quickly past diagnosing the moment and focused on what it actually demands. A few things that stood out: → AI is no longer about pilots. 2026 is the year companies have to prove it returns value. → Sovereignty means three different things to three different people. Until business and policy align on a definition, the gap will continue to create risk. → The workforce transition is a leadership question, not just a technological one. → The energy transition is accelerating and fragmenting at the same time, with the grid remaining the most under-addressed bottleneck.
