*Iran* must immediately stop using *torture* and *the death penalty* as *instruments of repression.*
The *people of Iran* are the *sole legitimate source of sovereignty.*
Members of the European Parliament have condemned the Iranian regime’s *escalating violence* against its own population, particularly against civil society actors, peaceful protesters, women, minorities, and vulnerable communities.
The *death toll* from recent protests is estimated to be *35,000 victims.*
The documented abuses, including systematic violence, arbitrary detention, and inhumane treatment, amount to *crimes against humanity.*
In a resolution, Parliament:
* *condemns* the regime’s *systematic oppression, inhumane prison conditions and arbitrary detentions*
* calls on UN bodies to *independently document atrocities and preserve evidence* for future prosecutions
* urges the Council and the European Commission to expand *targeted sanctions*
* reaffirms *unwavering solidarity with the Iranian people*
* calls on the EU and EU countries to develop *concrete support strategies for the families of detainees*
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said:
> “Today, MEPs voted by an overwhelming majority to demand an immediate end to the Iranian regime’s brutal violence and the release of all political prisoners.
> Sanctions on members of the terrorist IRGC must be fully enforced. No loopholes, no excuses.
> Iran will be free.”
