Europe’s wine sector supports millions of jobs 🍇🍷 but the industry is changing, trends are shifting. The EU is staying on top of it. The EU is the *world’s biggest wine producer and exporter,* turning out *21.1 billion litres* in 2024. Toasts to that! To help producers keep up with changing tastes and better tap into emerging consumer trends, Parliament adopted new measures: *🍾 New labels:* * “Alcohol-free 0.0%” on bottles with less than 0.05 % alcohol. * “Alcohol-reduced” for wine from 0.5% alcohol but 30% lower than the standard 💶 *Boosting wine tourism and exports* – incentives to showcase European wines at home and abroad. 🌱 *More flexibility for winegrowers* – in response to weather challenges and plant disease. _🔗 Find out more: https://link.europa.eu/BqKYhH_ *How important are clear labels when choosing a product?* ❤️ Very important 👍 Somewhat important 😂 I rarely check labels

🤖 AI is changing the way we create.   🧑‍🎨 Creators must stay in control.   🫰 Creators must be compensated fairly.   *Generative AI* is a type of AI that *creates new content*, like text, images or music, based on existing content. For these systems to work effectively *they need to be trained on high-quality data.* However, this should not mean that creators get the short end of the stick.   To boost innovation while protecting intellectual property rights, Parliament members are calling for:   💶 *fair compensation* when protected work trains AI 🌍 AI in the EU market *must follow EU rules*, wherever trained 👍 *creators’ right to say yes or no* to AI using their work 🗂️ *clear records* of copyrighted work used for training 📋 new rules for *licensing* of copyrighted content for use by genAI 🤝 *voluntary collective licensing pacts* per sector. Generative AI can also affect *media pluralism* 📰 by *collecting news selectively and diverting online traffic and revenues away* from news outlets. To address this, Parliament members want news organisations to have: 🛑 *the right to refuse* the use of their content 🎛️ *full control* over how their content is used 💶 *adequate compensation* when their content trains AI   Innovation matters. But so do the people behind the work. Parliament is standing up for them.   _🔗 Find out more: https://link.europa.eu/B6qVj9_

25 years ago, the *Treaty of Nice* helped shape the European Union we know today 🇪🇺 By *strengthening the European Parliament* and *expanding its legislative powers*, it prepared the EU for welcoming 10 Central and Eastern European countries, as well as Cyprus and Malta. A stronger Parliament for a bigger Europe 🇪🇺 *In your view, what was the most important achievement of the Treaty of Nice?* 👍 Preparing the EU for enlargement ❤️ Strengthening the European Parliament 🙏 Making EU decision-making more efficient 😮 It's my first time hearing of it

⚠️ Abuse, harassment and stereotypes can be used to *intimidate* and *silence people.* *Women* are often the *main targets online.* This is not a private issue. It is *a threat to society.* When women are *pushed out of digital spaces and public debate,* our democracies and our societies suffer. The European Parliament is fighting online violence with legislation that: 🛡️ makes *big platforms responsible* for removing *illegal hate speech* and limiting *abusive content* ⚖️ criminalises *offences committed online,* such as disclosing private information and cyberflashing. _#InternationalWomensDay_ _🔗 Read more about the state of play of women in politics in the EU: https://link.europa.eu/6Pd9Pc_

Europe holds the key to its own *defence*. It’s time to unlock it 🤝 💪 The EU needs: 💪 a stronger and more integrated *EU single market for defence* 🇪🇺 *a “buy European” approach* 🇺🇦 *Ukraine* to be a vital part of *the EU defence market* 🤝 to act together to *fill serious defence gaps* 🪖 its *flagship projects to move forward,* and quickly ...says the European Parliament in its proposals for the future of European defence 🇪🇺 _🔗 Read more: https://link.europa.eu/YxMd46_

*Jackie Fox* lost her daughter, Nicole, to *suicide* in 2018 after being *bullied online for years.*   She was just 21 years old.   Since then, Jackie discovered that there were no laws in Ireland to protect children or adults from such bullying attacks, which motivated her to campaign for the adoption of _*"Coco's Law",*_ named after her daughter’s nickname, Coco.   Today, in an event to mark _*International Women's Day,*_ Jackie called on the European Parliament to make this European law too, to *protect all children and adults from similar horrific abuse.*

*Iran* must immediately stop using *torture* and *the death penalty* as *instruments of repression.* The *people of Iran* are the *sole legitimate source of sovereignty.* Members of the European Parliament have condemned the Iranian regime’s *escalating violence* against its own population, particularly against civil society actors, peaceful protesters, women, minorities, and vulnerable communities. The *death toll* from recent protests is estimated to be *35,000 victims.* The documented abuses, including systematic violence, arbitrary detention, and inhumane treatment, amount to *crimes against humanity.* In a resolution, Parliament: * *condemns* the regime’s *systematic oppression, inhumane prison conditions and arbitrary detentions* * calls on UN bodies to *independently document atrocities and preserve evidence* for future prosecutions * urges the Council and the European Commission to expand *targeted sanctions* * reaffirms *unwavering solidarity with the Iranian people* * calls on the EU and EU countries to develop *concrete support strategies for the families of detainees* European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said: > “Today, MEPs voted by an overwhelming majority to demand an immediate end to the Iranian regime’s brutal violence and the release of all political prisoners. > Sanctions on members of the terrorist IRGC must be fully enforced. No loopholes, no excuses. > Iran will be free.” _🔗 Find out more: https://link.europa.eu/TW7FkR_

✈️🌍 Planning your next trip? You can soon book with greater peace of mind thanks to *stronger EU protections for package travel.* After the lessons of the pandemic and high-profile travel company bankruptcies, Parliament has reinforced your rights when you book *a package holiday.* Here’s what this means for you 👇 ✅ A *clearer definition* of what counts as a package holiday, so you know when you’re protected; 💶 The *right to refuse vouchers* and *request a cash refund within 14 days;* 🛡️ If your travel organiser goes *bankrupt*, you must receive *a refund for cancelled services* within 6 months; The updated rules also *strengthen your rights to information, assistance and refunds.* This includes cases of bankruptcy or extraordinary travel disruptions. 🗓️ EU countries still have to approve the update to the rules.
