The 70th session of the Convention on the Status of Women is underway at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Leading voices, including UN Messenger of Peace Malala Yousafzai, spoke at the opening event where she stressed the urgent need to advance women’s and girls’ rights worldwide. “It is not enough to grieve for girls who are suffering in Iran, Gaza and Afghanistan — we must move from sympathy to accountability.”

The rights of people in Afghanistan are being crushed by the de facto authorities – with women and girls suffering the most. UN High Commission for Human Rights, Volker Türk, says the extreme discrimination and oppression women and girls are facing amounts to persecution. Stressing that the system of segregation is reminiscent of apartheid, the High Commissioner has urged Afghanistan’s de facto authorities to reverse the systematic exclusion of half the population.
